Cataract surgery involves
removal of natural lens and placement of an intraocular lens (IOL). A membrane is left behind IOL for
securing it in the right place.
This membrane can later become cloudy because of scar formation and
cause blurry vision.
When this
happens, a laser procedure can be applied to open a hole at the center of that
membrane and restore your vision.
Sometimes this procedure causes minor displacement of IOL and your
glasses prescription may have to be changed. The procedure is done in the office and only takes about 10
minutes. There is usually no pain
or discomfort.
You may experience
some floaters after the laser treatment.
This will subside in about 1 to 2 weeks. You will be asked to use some eye drops and return to clinic
for follow up in a week. Your
doctor will exam your eye and determine if your glasses prescription needs to
be changed or not.
Please understand that it is
not “returning of cataract”. Your
natural lens has been removed and replaced with a plastic IOL which will stay
clear for as long as you live. It
is the membrane behind the IOL that becomes cloudy, not the IOL itself.
